Electric Shavers – What’s Hot at Amazon?

Braun Series 7Amazon publishes lists – updated hourly, they say – of the top selling products in many categories. Here are the best sellers in electric foil shavers.

1. Braun Syncro Shaver System Clean & Renew Refills – actually the first three places in the list are accessories, rather than actual shavers. Though having said that, the Braun refills have an amazing 1,350 customer reviews, and with an average rating of a high 4.6 stars.

2. Braun Series 7 Pulsonic 70S Cassette Replacement – another accessory, but with more than 450 customer reviews, and an average rating of 4.2 stars.

3. Panasonic WES035P Vortex HydraClean Shaving System Solution Cartridges for Men’s Shaver – also highly rated, with around 320 customer reviews, and an average rating of 4.5 stars.

4. Braun Series 7 790cc Pulsonic Shaver System (picture) – I’ve written about this shaver several times. I think it’s possibly the best electric shaver on the market.

5. Braun 3Series 380S-4 Wet & Dry Shaver – I’ve written about these, too. I described them as seriously good.

6. Wahl Professional 8061 5-star Series Rechargeable Shaver Shaper – when I wrote about the Wahl I suggested you either love it or hate it.

7. Panasonic ES8103S Men’s 3-Blade (Arc 3) Wet/Dry Rechargeable Electric Shaver – Panasonic’s most popular shaver. I wrote about it here.

8. Remington SP290 Replacement Screen and Blades for Series 4 Foil Shavers – very popular, with 170 customer reviews and a high average rating of 4.4 stars.

9. Panasonic ES-LA63-S Arc 4 Mens Electric Shaver with Dual Motor and Multi-Flex Pivoting Head – a superior shaver with four cutting blades. Around 600 customer reviews and an average rating of 4.4 stars attest to its quality. This is an excellent shaver.

10. Braun M90 Mobile Shaver – an excellent low-cost (less than $20 at Amazon) travel shaver. I wrote about it here

Men’s Hair Trimmers – The Best Gifts for Christmas

Wahl beard trimmerHow about a nose hair trimmer as a Christmas gift for a man friend? It may sound a little weird, but in fact it is highly practical, and may be much more appreciated that a box of chocolates or a necktie.

Amazon provides a list of gift ideas in many diverse categories. Here are some of the suggestions in the hair trimmers and clippers category, with a few excerpts from customer reviews.

1. Panasonic ER-GN30-K Vortex Wet/Dry Nose and Facial Hair Trimmer – …lightweight, portable and both easy to use and easy to clean. My expectation is that it should last at least 2-3 years (Panasonic recommends replacing the blade every three years). If the model doesn’t hold up, I’ll report back the findings. Until then, I recommend this as an affordable and safer option than poking nose and aural cavities with a pair of sadistic scissors.

2. Wahl 5537-1801 Cordless Battery Operated Beard Trimmer with Bonus Ear, Nose and Brow Trimmer (picture) – I am a lifetime beard grower, and have had many different trimmers, and I happened to buy a Wahl one day, and it’s outlasted all my other big name trimmers, and I totally mistreated it and abused it, and it still trims like a dream. So I decided when i was looking to update my trimming kit to look at some Wahl Trimmers, and i was not disappointed; it’s plastic and feels light but it does the job, and it does it the first time. It comes with everything I needed, and the cradle held everything pretty well. The instructions included are very useful as well.

3. Wahl Trimmer All-In-One Lithium Ion – Pros: Powerful motor. Keeps its charge. Feels solid. Standard Wahl narrow blade head good for precise trims. Cons: Too many accessories! A better design could keep it more simple. Standard Wahl narrow blade head not as good for faster trims.

4. Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman Beard and Mustache Trimmer – I have been using a Wahl beard trimmer for nearly 6 years. It finally started to show its age and I went looking for a new one. I tried Remington brand, and they just did not work for me. I have very thick, stubborn hair and the Remmington’s blades did not get close enough to my skin to get the hairs I wanted. So I went back to what I knew worked, and re-ordered a new Wahl Beard Trimmer. This one is very similar to my old one, except a few new things. There are more blade guards than before, and the clipper setting now has 6 stages instead of 5. Otherwise, the trimmer is the same.

And that is a good thing. Immediately, the new Wahl made a difference and I am very happy with the results. The reason why Wahl is so much better than anything else (including the Remington) is that the blades that move back and forth are so much closer  to the guard teeth that you can see the difference. Go to a store and look…you can see the difference between this trimmer and other brands. The Wahl will always cut closer and better. There is no other brand I would recommend – Wahl trimmers are simply the highest quality you can find in this price range that give the closest trim on your face.

5. Andis Company Silver Clipper Haircutting Kit – 19 Pieces (18645) – I have never heard of this brand before, so I gave a try. Well I love it!! It cuts hair like its butter. Smooth and fast. Easy to use. I recommend this item to everyone. (But note that this product has a higher-than-average number of negative reviews.)

6. Remington MB-200 Titanium Mustache and Beard Trimmer – I was looking for a cheap trimmer for my beard, which I usually keep pretty short. I bought this without seeing it in a store. I think I had seen that it had good reviews here, and it was under thirty bucks, which I figured was a good limit for something that is only going to last so long. I didn’t need anything fancy. I got exactly what I was looking for, but I’m surprised how well it works. There aren’t any parts that seem like they’ll fall apart, and it’s got a great feel in the hand. I like the action on it a lot. My first trim was immediately better and much quicker then the previous trimmer I had (which had died on me). I think this is a great deal for someone who needs an occasional shave of a beard. I really like it. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done very well. I can’t think of how it would be better.

Men’s Hair Trimmers and Clippers – The Most Highly Rated

Oster Blade LubeAmazon presents quite a useful list of its top-rated products – based on customer reviews – for many diverse categories. Here are the five most highly rated products for men’s hair trimmers and clippers.

1. Oster Blade Lube Premium Lubricating Oil for Clippers and Blades Hair Clippers Trimmers And Groomers (photo) – 4.8 stars average customer rating

2. Andis Clipper Oil – 4.8 stars

3. Wahl 84701 Professional Super Taper II Hair Clipper – 4.6 stars

4. WAHL Professional 2 Hole Precision Clipper Blade – 4.7 stars

Men’s Hair Trimmers and Clippers – The Most Wished-For List

Wahl 79300-400 Hair TrimmerAmazon presents a regularly updated list of the most wished-for products in men’s hair trimmers and clippers. It is probably little surprise that it is pretty similar to the best seller list.

The most wished-for item is the hugely popular Panasonic ER-GN30-K Vortex Wet/Dry Nose and Facial Hair Trimmer. Here is an excerpt from one of more than 1,800 Amazon customer reviews:

This is the first time I’ve used a trimmer and I love it. Wasn’t sure what to expect, whether it would hurt or if I would be sneezing all day. None of that happened. The trimmer is:

– very easy to set up
– requires a AA battery (not included)
– washable
– operates at an acceptable noise level (low humming sound)
– gets rid of hair with no pull or tuck feeling

I used this for my nose and ears and it worked great. The rounded cap on top has a blade on the inside, the blade is placed slightly lower than the tip of the cap. This helps avoid any skin tucks, making it completely safe to use. There is a small opening in the top cap that can be exposed by rotating the head of the trimmer. The opening here is what makes the trimmer washable, it lets water in to wash the blade and also drains it out.

The list price is $20, but at the time of writing it was selling for less than $12.50 at Amazon.

The second most wished-for product is the Wahl 79300-400 Color Pro 20 Piece Complete Haircutting Kit (picture). It has a list price of $41, but at the time of writing was selling at Amazon for just $19.

Third on the most wished-for list is the Philips Norelco NT9130 D-Finer Precision Trimmer, for nose and ear hair, which was recently named by Amazon as its top-selling men’s grooming product of the past 15 years. It has a list price of $20, but at the time of writing was selling at Amazon for $18.95.

Men’s Hair Trimmers and Clippers – The Best Sellers

Panasonic ER-GN30-K Nose Hair TrimmerWhich are the top selling men’s hair trimmers and clippers? The Amazon best sellers list changes hourly, but here are some of the most popular.

By far the most popular is the Panasonic ER-GN30-K Vortex Wet/Dry Nose and Facial Hair Trimmer (picture), which is not just the top seller in its category but is in fact one of Amazon’s best selling products in the entire health and personal care category. It has more than 1,800 customer reviews, with a high average rating of 4.3 stars.

The list price is $20, but at Amazon you will often find it priced as low as $12.50.

The second-most popular item in the men’s hair trimmers and clippers category is the Wahl 79300-400 Color Pro 20-Piece Complete Haircutting Kit. This has around 970 customer reviews, with an average rating of 4.4 stars. Though it has a list price of $41, it is (at the time of writing) selling at Amazon for just $19.

Note the following excerpt from a review:

I’m usually leery of cheap products. I was going to spend $120-$150 for a professional-grade Oster Classic 76. But, since I’ve never cut my own hair before, I was worried about making that kind of investment. Based on the positive reviews, I gambled on this Wahl. I’m glad I did. The quality is definitely worth more than the $20 price. And, the instructional materials were valuable for a first-timer like me.

I was thinking when this breaks…I might invest in a professional clipper. But, I don’t know. If it lasts 2-3 years it’s probably a better value to pay $20 for that length of use compared to a more expensive pro model requiring blade sharpening, replaced motor brushes, etc.

Also hugely popular is the Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman Beard and Mustache Trimmer. It has more than 570 customer reviews, though with a slightly lower average rating than the others, of 3.8 stars.

Here is one useful review:

* Price.
* Charges quickly, and stays charged afterward for some time.
* Gives a great trim, nice and neat and no pulling. Has all the attachments you’ll ever need.
* Easy to maintain and clean up.

* Attachment system could be a little better, a little tough to get on and off without some practice. They do work great and are easy to use once on, however.

Bottom line:
* Great trimmer for a great price, you can’t go wrong here. Can use it with the cord or without and works great either way, this thing will last you forever. I’m really happy I picked this one up out of the crowd of trimmers I looked at.

It has a list price of $25, but, at the time of writing, was selling for less than $15 at Amazon.

Reviews – Wahl Professional 8061 5-star Shaver

By Rayy Zar

Wahl Professional 8061Wahl is one of the smaller players in the men’s shaver market, but its mid-priced Professional 8061 5-star Series is very popular.

The only official product description available is brief:

  • Super-close bump-free shaving
  • Coated hypoallergenic foil
  • Cord/cordless operation

Nevertheless, it has attracted more than 180 customer reviews at Amazon, with an average rating of 3.9 stars – good, but not great. Though more than 100 of the reviews are five-star, there are also quite a few one-star and two-star reviews, suggesting you love or you hate this shaver.

Here’s an excerpt from a four-star review:

This shaver replaced a Panasonic that cost over twice as much. The Wahl shaved faster, closer, and with less skin irritation than the Panasonic. It also lasted longer between charges. The only flaw immediately apparent was the lack of a pop-up trimmer. I thought it was an excellent value. I have a heavy beard, and it did the job. After having the product for a while, I purchased a new replacement foil & cutter bar assembly, as suggested in the instructions. The new replacement foil lasted exactly two weeks & fell apart (making it and the shaver useless) – it had a defect in the molding of the plastic which held it together. After some miscommunication, Wahl Customer Service replaced the defective part at no charge, telling me that they were aware of the defect and had remedied the situation. The shaver now works as well as it did when new.

And part of a five-star review:

I’ve been using this shaver for years (thanks to my old barber) and it definitely works – BUT only for stubble-length hair. This shaver won’t do much for hair longer than that… In my opinion this shaver gives me the closest shave I’ve ever gotten without having to put a blade & shave gel on my face or scalp. I highly recommend this product.

The Best Shavers – Really?

By Rayy Zar

Philips Norelco 1250X:40 SensoTouchGizmodo has named what it says is “The Best Electric Razor.” However, it only tested four, so its verdict may be a little dubious.

According to the website, testing was done over two months, with each shaver subjected to one, two and three days of stubble.

We rated the gadgets on their comfort in use and their shaving efficiency—the closeness and thoroughness of the shave, how long a shave took, and how often I had to re-shave areas. The rate at which their heads wore out, the associated cost of replacement heads, and other operating costs were also taken into ranking consideration as well.

And the winner is NOT the Braun Series 7 790cc Pulsonic, which Shaverama would rate as probably the best. In fact, the Braun was rated fourth out of the four shavers tested, with the following comment:

While the Series 7 worked especially well on the upper lip and cheeks, shaving the neck was a nightmare. It was like the last three hairs remaining somehow always fell outside the realm of the shaver’s ability—needing five or six passes to finally capture. It’s also pricey…Don’t get me wrong, the Series 7 is a capable razor. But given the price and upkeep costs, you can find more cut for your buck elsewhere.

In fact, the winner was the Braun’s big rival, the Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D (picture). The reviewer could find almost nothing wrong with it:

Shaving with the Sensotouch 3D feels like removing facial hair with robot kisses. There is virtually zero hair tugging, even through three-day long stubble. The SensoTouch did require more passes as the stubble length increased, but for daily use, its performance was unmatched. I often found myself using it to clean up after testing the other units—using it wet or with shaving foam, the SensoTouch consistently shaved trouble spots that the others missed.

In second place was the Panasonic Arc 4 and in third place was the Wahl Lithium Triple Play.
